Stone, song and the long memory of the valley

The source is natural, but the landscape around it has been inhabited, crossed and interpreted for centuries. Sacred architecture, fortifications, traditional music and rural patterns give the water a human context.

Living heritage

The Church of Holy Salvation near the upper Cetina is one of Croatia’s important pre-Romanesque monuments. It dates to the 9th century and stands beside an extensive medieval burial landscape.

Vrlika adds another layer: the medieval Prozor Fortress above the field, the historic Česma spring and park, and traditions that connect mountain, village and river. Ojkanje, a distinctive form of singing from the region, is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

Treat these places as one cultural geography rather than isolated “stops”. The valley makes sense when water, stone, routes, work and memory are read together.
